Foo Fighters and Shudder to Think

Foo Fighters as “surprise guest” to Shudder to Think

My friends and I missed out on getting tickets to the Foo Fighters show at the Capitol Ballroom (RIP) and were really bummed out.  Then we saw Shudder to Think who was opening that show was playing the following night at the black cat with a “surprise guest”.  We knew it had to be the Foo Fighters as Dave owned part of that club.  My friend Rachel and I got tickets on the off chance we were correct.  Rachel had attended the Mike Watt show at the black cat that had Dave grohl on drums and Eddie Vedder on guitar.  She got to meet them! Unfortunately for me I had an appointment that night and didn’t get to go.

We decided to go down very early to the possible foo fighters gig and hang out incase it was them.  Rachel knocked on the door and a familiar looking guy opened it.  She asked if Dave was around and the guy said he was soundchecking but would come out after.  I was like there is no way he will come out.  Boy was I wrong.  Five minutes later, Dave Freaking Grohl comes out looks at my friend and says, “Hi Rachel, good to see you again”.  My jaw was on the floor.  He talks to us for a couple of minutes and says he has to go out to dinner with his mom and his sister but when the door open we can meet up with him at the back bar.

I literally had to pinch myself.  We grabbed dinner at the mcdonalds on the corner and went back in line and when the doors opened we went to the back bar.  Sure enough Dave is sitting there with a smile and invited us over.  It has been a long time but it seemed like he talked to us forever.  Dave Grohl took his time before a gig to sit there and talk to two high school kids like they were his old friends.  I will never forget that night.

Shudder to Think was awesome.  They were from DC so it was neat to see them in their hometown.  Highly recommend people check them out.  (https://www.facebook.com/shuddertothinkofficial)

The Foo Fighters were just amazing.  Raw power.  Was really cool to see them in such a small local venue.  If you have been to the new black cat, the old one was smaller so it was a very intimate spot.

Foo Fighters Concert Setlist at Black Cat, Washington on August 17, 1995 | setlist.fm

Highlights of the set included: “This is a call”, “Big Me”, “Alone + Easy Target”, and “Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'” cover with Craig Wedren(lead singer of Shudder to Think) was on vocals.  All in all an amazing day.  I have attached my ticket from the show ($10!) and a flyer from the previous nights show that we didn’t get to attend. We would be back in under 24 hours to see another of my favorite bands L7.  Story to come in a later post.
